“You can’t live by the bay without a dog; and if you don’t have one, borrow one!”
That is the philosophy of Terri Sommé, a resident of Fairhope and avid dog lover. As such, this is an exciting time for her, because her book, The Dogs of Fairhope, will be making its debut around October 1. The coffee-table style book features her passion for both Fairhope and its four-legged residents.
On her daily walks through town and to the bay, Sommé encountered many dogs and their owners, who shared wonderful stories about their best friends. Many were rescued from neglect and abuse and from shelters; but they all had found their fur-ever homes.
The Dogs of Fairhope tells the stories of nine-four of Fairhope’s canines and reveals their funny antics and special personalities, as well as the love and commitment of their owners for their pets.
The Dogs of Fairhope includes pictures of dog rescues along the Gulf Coast after Katrina that Sommé participated in. This period further fed her passion for animals. Although she has since returned part-time as a registered nurse at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, she has completed FEMA’s requirements for registering for DART — Disaster Animal Rescue Team. Sommé also shares her story about Honey Bear, her adopted three-year-old pet, and how this rescued dog has changed her life.
Since moving to the picturesque town of Fairhope in early 2000, Sommé has become a volunteer at the Haven, Fairhope’s no-kill animal shelter, a place that has special meaning to her. For each book sold, a percentage of the profit will be donated to the Haven. And when you read the book, you’ll understand even more why this project was so dear to her.
